How Kenya And Morocco Marked The Diplomatic Agenda Of The Year 2024
The Silence of The Advocates of African Unity
Issues like the war in Ukraine and the possibility of the victory of President Donald Trump,in the US presidential election dominated public discussion in the last few months of the year 2023.At the same time, experts dissected the consequences of the war in Ukraine on EU defence and the commitment of the United States to the security of Europe. And during the first four months of the year 2024,there were no references to the Western Sahara crisis and the rise of gang violence that drawled the economy of the Republic of Haiti to a tailspin.
Kenya took the banner of International Solidarity
Again the silence of the advocates of African unity on the Haitian crisis paved the way for the emergence of the Republic of Kenya under President William Ruto as the spokesman of the continent. As the Kenyan leader, accepted the decision of the UN-led Multinational Security Mission to Haiti,by sending police officers to assist the national police of Haiti. The Republic of Kenya implemented this pledge with the arrival on the 25th of June of the first batch of officers and the second batch on the 16th of July.Immediately, the officers from the General Service and the Police Service units went into action and secured the University Hospital and the National Port,to enable the UN mission control and preserve international connection.
Unforeseen Diplomatic Crisis Favourable To France- Morocco Relations
The Wretched of the Earth published by Frantz Fanon castigated the colonial system,in post independence Algeria, memory preservation activists continued this tradition of preserving the tangibles on the years of pain and they relished the initiatives of President Macron to close these disheartening pages in the bonds between the two countries. But the hopes of anticolonialist and memory preservation activists were dashed by three unforeseen diplomatic crisis. The first diplomatic crisis can be traced to the assistance offered by the ambassador in Tunisia to a political prisoner(Amira Bouraoui,a French national, who escaped to Tunisia)while awaiting trial in Algeria.
The arrival of the political prisoner in Paris displeased Algerian policy makers,to the extent that a presidential visit programmed for May 2024 in Paris was cancelled. In July, the letter of President Macron to the King of Morocco recognising the right of the Kingdom on the issue of Western Sahara, that was largely supported by Algerian policy makers further polarised the two countries. And in November 2024,the arrest and detention of Boualem Sansal, the Franco-Algerian writer, for questioining the territorial integrity of Algeria became the third diplomatic crisis between the two countries.
